Winter Sugar Blues

Every year, I notice that at this time of year we tend to eat more sugar. My clients all talk about it – the holiday parties, the well-meaning corporate gifts of cookies and chocolates, the holiday meal desserts.

It’s not just the November/December holidays, either. Do you know what I’m talking about? Your sugar feast actually begins at the end of October, as the weather gets colder, the days get shorter, and you fill your goodie bag with Halloween treats. Then you have Thanksgiving pies, Christmas cookies, and New Year’s drinks. The sugar intake continues with Valentine’s Day chocolates, and extends all the way to Easter baskets full of chocolate bunnies and jelly beans. Then the weather gets warmer, the trees and flowers come into bloom, the sun shines a little longer, the clocks spring forward, and sugar plays a lesser role into your life until the next October rolls around and you begin all over again.

Your sugar festivities coincide with winter, which is the “yin” time of year. “Yin” refers to passivity, quiet, rest, and introspection. You see winter’s yin all around you as many animals go into hibernation, the flowers close up shop, and the trees turn brown and dry. All of nature gets quiet and rests, except for us! We humans are anything but yin as we run around doing our holiday errands, traveling, and finishing our current year projects. We behave completely counter to what nature is suggesting we do at this time of year, which is to be yin and rest. Instead, we act complete “yang:” active, assertive, extraverted, and talkative.

And we eat sugar. Sugar is a “yin” food. Yin foods elevate levels of serotonin in your brain, resulting in feelings of well being and happiness. Sugar is the most yin of all foods.

So is it a complete coincidence that your sweet tooth kicks in just as we head into this yin time of year?

No, of course not. It’s actually your body being very smart, as usual. Your sugar cravings are your body’s way of saying “wait, slow down!” So as nature tells you to be yin and you continue to act yang, your body will begin craving sugar in an effort to force you to be more yin. See, it’s all about being in sync with the earth’s natural rhythm. The more you stray from it (which we do with our electric lights, heating, and social calendars), the more your body will try to compensate. In this case, your body is craving more sugar (yin) in an effort to balance out our yang behavior.

So keep this in mind as we head further into Sugar Season. I invite you to consider what you can do to slow down, take it easy, and act more yin as nature intends us to do. Maybe that means getting to bed earlier so that you can sleep more, postponing a home improvement project, or saying “no” to the eighth holiday party invitation you’ve received. Honor your body by getting plenty of rest, good nutrition, relaxation, and sleep, thereby decreasing your need to consume yin foods. Your body will thank you for it, and chances are you will crave less sugar as well!

Lavender: The Queen Of Herbs

Are you in love with lavender? If so, you’re not alone, as lavender has become the most popular aromatic herb. In fact, in 1999, the “queen of herbs” was named as the “year of lavender!”

As one of the most loved aromatic herbs, lavender has been cultivated and used throughout the centuries. In ancient times, the Egyptians used lavender in incense and perfume and it was even used in the mummification process. The Arabs, Greeks and Romans used lavender as an offering to their gods.

Because of its tendency to render a better quality essential oil, true lavender — which is found in the French and Mediterranean Alps, growing in altitudes of 6,000 feet — is considered to be the most effective of these aromatic herbs.

Common Uses Of Lavender

As an essential oil in today’s society, lavender is used, both internally and topically, for a number of conditions:

- Aromatic (a most popular fragrance)
– carminative (to relieve flatulence)
– antibacterial
– antiseptic
– nervine (to calm the nerves)
– expectorant
– stimulant
– cosmetic
– antispasmodic.

It has also been used to prevent some childhood infections and to soothe temper tantrums in children. The most common uses of lavender are to: treat burns (from minor to scalding), eczema, grazes, cuts, inflammation, dermatitis, headaches, migraines, fainting, nausea, insomnia, bacterial infections, boils, acne, arthritis and rheumatism. As a germicidal agent, lavender oil is non-toxic.

It contains linalool and linalool acetate which play important roles in the healing process.

Calming Effect Of Lavender

Both humans and animals, when inhaling lavender, experience a sedative effect that closely favors the calming effect of the geranium and peppermint plants. This is probably the reason why these aromatic herbs are favored for a variety of uses from treating depression and sleep disorders to treating premenstrual syndrome.

Lavender beauty and bath products, to be used for external purposes only, are often available in gift baskets. A wonderful gift for any occasion, lavender is sure to be appreciated by all who receive it. In addition to its use in aromatherapy products and treatments, lavender may be used to specifically treat depression.

The Gift Of Lavender

Lavender is a popular gift item that can be purchased separately or in a gift basket. Most of the aromatherapy gifts are made with essential oil and dried lavender buds. Examples of these are bar soap, bath bomb fizzers, bath crystals, bath oil beads, closet or drawer sachets, hand and body lotions, sleep pillows and soothing herbal sea salts. Beauty products that contain lavender range from body sprays and hair care products to a variety of skin care products. All of the above products mentioned are used for the sole purpose of creating a sense of peace and to promote relaxation.

Lavender Trivia

Did you know that lavender is also used in home cleaning products?

Throughout history, lavender has found its way into the homes of many historical figures. Queen Victoria insisted that her furniture and floors be cleaned with lavender to freshen up the rooms in her castle. Queen Elizabeth I of England enjoyed drinking lavender tea as a way to relieve her migraines and other maladies. During World War I, nurses treated injured soldiers by washing their wounds with an antiseptic wash that contained lavender.

Cooking With Lavender

Lavender is an amazingly versatile herb that is also used for cooking — not only at home, but also in many upscale restaurants. A member of the mint family, lavender flowers are wonderful flavor enhancers that can also add to the appearance of the food. Lavender flowers and leaves can be used freshly cut; their buds and stems can be dried before use.

It is best to use lavender with other herbs, such as fennel, oregano and savory, and it can also be used with its other mint cousins (rosemary, sage and thyme). Lavender has an extremely powerful aroma, so it must be used sparingly or the recipe will have a bitter taste, and you’ll feel like you are eating perfume. The next time you’re cooking up a storm, add a sprig of lavender to the pot and enjoy!

Ominous Fate

You do your business in the shadows of night,
thinking that money is your only right.
They come in droves, just to fill their need,
but you pay no attention, to what is your deed.

They beg for one more fix,
and you laugh, as you take their money, and make another mix.
One after another they die, just for you to be rich,
but you don’t stop, as you know their ending fate, is in some ditch.

With a smile and a pass of another bag of hate,
you don’t realize, you have sealed your own fate.
Hollowed and gaunt, they plea for your attention,
but in the end, you will not have forgiveness, or redemption.

You have brought a lot of people into my cold hand,
but a payment for your greed, is in demand.
You will not die by a needle, or hit of a pipe,
no, God has given me the right, to make your body ripe.

You will die in a fit of rage and hate,
oh there is no way ,to escape from this fate.

www.originalpoetry.com/Ominous-Fate
For I am death, and I have walked with you,
and understand, my words are true.

You have peddled your last strand of white powder,
for tonight, hell will hear your soul, even more louder.
Take the money, for by midnight, it will be your end,
for tonight you will accompany death, to hell, my friend!

Testimonials Can Increase Your Web Traffic

We’ve all seen and read product testimonials.
They’re a very valuable tool for merchant sales
and can often tip the scales in determining a
customer’s decision to buy. But testimonials
offer another superb benefit. It’s the benefit
to you and your marketing strategy.

When I’m on a site offering a product or service
I like to click on customer testimonials because
they are generally short and easy to read. People
typically point out exactly what they like about
a product and how they used it to their benefit.
Testimonials come from real users, they’re
not some ad written by the company.

Now, let’s take the testimonial concept and think
about it as a marketing strategy for you and your
business.

Website testimonials describe how buyers feel about
the products they have purchased and used. If you, as
a buyer, offer your testimonial with your name and
website address this now becomes a very valuable
marketing tool for you. It will expose you and your
business to everyone looking at that merchant’s
website. If the merchant site happens to be a
well-known site offering a high demand product, this
could mean huge exposure for you.

Note that many merchant sites will display your website
address but will not put an actual link to it. While
it’s ideal to have a link to your site it’s not always
necessary. I often investigate sites of testimonial
givers whether there is a link attached or not. As long
as your website address is displayed, that is good
enough.

Testimonials can also double as a great linking strategy
as well. If your testimonial includes your link and is
displayed on the front page of four or five high ranking
merchant sites this can increase your link popularity
tremendously. By doing this you have also just eliminated
the concern of linking to competitor sites and you’ve
avoided the hassle of reciprocal linking.

Testimonials don’t only need to be addressed to
merchants you buy from. You should also send your
testimonials to ezines or free online services that
you use. Send them in the form of complimentary notes.
Compliment their products or services and describe
how you find them useful. Websites interested in
boosting sales will often use them and you are
much more likely to get printed if you are
delivering a compliment.

Get the Sales That You Should Be Getting!

Simply ask yourself a question – How many sales are you missing day in and out by not having your very own online presence? Doing your daily business by bricks and mortal way can only help you reach your potential customers by some length only. Comparing to traditional way, online business presence would bring you a whole new horizon in term of potential customer’s base.

There are several options in building your online business presence; some would go for the Rep or “Clone” Website e.g. sub-domain website address coded with individual ID. But beware! Most Rep or “Clone” sites can’t really be personalized. And your ID coded page usually is either hard or impossible to get indexed in the search engines, moreover getting high ranking there.

Just give it a try and do a search on the big G, Yahoo, and MSN. Search for some items and see the returned result. Be it software, download, magazine…etc. You could clearly see that those with their own website with TLD (Top Level Domain) name will rank higher than the sub-domains.

If you have a sub-domain given by your main affiliate, you should be able to see that your sub-domain will be ranking much lower that the said main TLD whom had provided you with the sub-domain. For illustration purpose, ABCD.com would be in higher position than ABCD.com/xyz .

What’s more, your sub-domain’s website address will most likely be always pointing back to your main TLD provider, giving them a further boost in ranking position. Clearly, you are giving other a boost in their SE positioning, and by the mean channeling the traffic back to them! You should be getting that for your business website, not others! The priority should be your own business website home page; it should come first before others.

You would ask, “How does it actually affect me and my money to be earned”? What does it means to you then? Simple – there are millions of people searching for YOUR products or services everyday. By having your very own website for business, you are not lost in big sea pool of other sub-domain or ID coded “Clone” websites in the search engines.

When you are consistent in building up own website, you’ll be truly surprise one day when even the simplest terms for your business website could climb their way all to the top position in search engine results. And that means giving you more free traffic than you could expect! Of which in return could generate much more potential business for you. That’s what you are looking for isn’t it? A consistent income generating online business channel of your very own! It’s what we could term as “Valuable Online Business Equity”!

Then, once you get those visitors to your site, it’s totally up to you to turn them into buying customers. The best way to do is to get them on your subscription list, and grab their loyalty. From there onwards, lay your marketing strategy out in serialized chain. Make them your long term buying customers.

If you don’t have your own website as of today, start taking action NOW to build your personal website today! Act NOW! Make your present on the net, its YOUR BUSINESS to be build!

Of course, one would ask then, “How it is going to perform?” That would need further discussion on the area which we can explore together. First, build your own site and turn it to income generating business equity for you! That’s the priority. That’s what you should be aiming for…That’s your Goal to be achieved!

Don’t Fall For The Latest Internet Identity Theft Scam

: I use PayPal to accept credit cards for my online collectibles business. I recently received an email that my PayPal account was going to expire in five days if I didn’t click a link in the email and give them my PayPal account information. Being naturally paranoid I decided not to give this information and I’m happy to say that my PayPal account did not expire. Was this a scam? — Brenda A.

A: Be thankful that your paranoia kicked in, Brenda, because you were about to fall victim to the scam of the week, this one aimed at the 35 million merchants and individuals who use Paypal.com as their online payment processor.

The email you received was not from PayPal, but from an Internet bad guy behind a forged email address using the PayPal.com domain. You should understand that no reputable online company will ever ask you to provide your account information. Think about it. They already have this information. Why would they ask you to provide it.

Since I use PayPal for several of my online ventures, I, too, received the email in question. The email first seeks to instill fear in you by saying that your PayPal account will be closed if you do not provide personal information. You are then directed to open an attached executable file and enter your PayPal account information and other personal information that PayPal doesn’t even require, including your social security number, checking and savings account information, driver’s license number, and other personal information that can be used to clean out your PayPal account and perhaps even steal your identity.

If you’re not familiar with PayPal, it is a hugely successful, web-based company (purchased by eBay in 2002) that many online retailers and eBay sellers use to accept electronic payments for everything from newsletter subscriptions to consulting services to just about any product for sale on eBay.

The allure of PayPal is that it does not require the seller to have a bank merchant account through which to process credit cards. Anyone with a verifiable email address and bank account can use PayPal and the service can be implemented almost immediately after registering. When someone places an order on a website that uses PayPal for online payments, that customer is directed to PayPal.com to complete the payment process using a credit card or electronic check. The merchant can transfer the money collected in his PayPal account to his checking account any time he likes. Since many larger merchants make this transfer just once a week or so, their PayPal accounts are ripe for the picking from those who have the cunning and lack of ethics required to gain access.

The shear number of PayPal customers is one reason it has become a popular target of scam artists trying to steal personal information from individuals and businesses alike. Identify theft is on the rise. Thanks to the Internet stealing someone’s identity has never been easier. At any given moment, there are any number of Internet thieves using all manner of high tech wizardry to steal personal and business information from unsuspecting souls, and many times they can gain access to this information simply by asking the person to provide it through fraudulent means.

The PayPal scam is just the latest in a long line of sophisticated attempts to steal personal information through online means, Amazon, eBay, Dell Computer, and many others have been the brunt of many such scams in recent years.

Identity theft is what’s known as “a knowledge crime,” which means that the criminal doesn’t have to break into your house to rob you blind. If you have a bank account and a social security number, you are susceptible to identity theft.

While most people are familiar with identity theft, most business men and women never think about it happening to them, at least on a professional level. Consider this: if a criminal can learn your business checking account number or the number of your company credit card, they can steal far more from your business than if they had simply knocked down the door and carted off your desk.

The Internet aside, most business and personal identity theft is still the result of stolen wallets and dumpster diving. You should guard your business records closely and be very careful what you throw away. Stop and think for a moment what a criminal might find in the dumpster behind your office.

There’s a good chance that dumpster has, at various times, contained scraps of paper with your social security number, driver’s license number, credit card number, old ATM cards, telephone calling cards, and other pieces of vital business information like bank statements, invoices, and purchase orders. A dumpster-diving thief could literally rob your business blind in a matter of hours.

Here are a few ways to protect yourself from business and personal identity theft.

Never give out your first name, last name, business name, email address, account passwords, credit card numbers, bank account information, PIN number, social security number, or driver’s license number.

Change your online account passwords every 30 days. Believe it or not, a hacker who steals your personal information can guess your online account passwords in about two minutes. If your Charles Schwab online account password is your birthday or the name of your first born or family pet, count on a hacker cracking that code faster than you can say “Bill Gates.”

Never provide personal information in response to an email or telephone call. Just because someone calls and says they are from Dunn & Bradstreet and need to confirm your business information does not mean they are really from Dunn & Bradstreet.

Never give your business credit card number over the phone to place an order with someone who has called you unsolicited. If you are interested in what they are selling get their number, check out their company, then call them back to place the order.

If you think that you have become the victim of identity theft or think someone is trying to steal your identity or personal information you should report them immediately to the Federal Trade Commission. You will find more information on their website at http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/. For more information on what to do if identity theft happens to you visit http://www.privacyrights.org/fs/fs17a.htm.

So, if you ever receive an email from PayPal, Amazon, eBay, or any other ecommerce website asking you to update your account information by email you can pretty much bet the farm that it is a scam.

Here’s to your success.

Banning Poker Is Just a Lawn Mower: the More Serious Problem Exists at the Root

Online Casino Advisory put out a controversial article detailing the seriousness of gambling and pokern addiction, but the thesis claims that a ban on gambling doesn’t address the real problem, compulsive personalities.

Too many times we get tear-jerk stories about the tragedies that befall a gambling poker addict, and that message is perpetuated over and over by the conservative, anti-gambling movements as an excuse to ban gambling in it’s entirety.

But the fact remains, that people with personality disorders simply find other outlets to act out. Expert Lawrence Anderson, a problem gambling analyst, articulates this. “Many studies have found compulsive gambling and poker to be and expression of an underlying behavior dysfunction.” Likewise, “Removing gambling from the equation does not cure the cause, but simply forces it to manifest itself in other dysfunctional ways, including drugs, alcohol abuse, or domestic issues.”

Anderson makes other astute points as well. The same stories, the exaggerated anecdotes could be said of guns, of drugs, of people addicted to their work or career.

The problem is one of oversimplification. We can blame the vectors that the problems manifests itself through until we’re blue in the face, but the fact doesn’t change: we’re not addressing the real issue.

Instead of shunning away from issues by trying to get them out of the pubic eye, we should as a people instead find ways to help the person deal with the cause, this includes therapy, support groups, and social reinforcement.

Living Well with Chronic Illness

Living with chronic illness impacts one’s physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Living with chronic illness often causes one to feel helpless and hopeless, discouraged and isolated. It can devastate one’s career and financial security, friendships and love relationships, creativity, concentration, motivation, and one’s very peace of mind.

It is important now and useful long-term, to remain as active, social, and productive as possible. That means focus on what you can do and let go of what you can no longer do. Create priorities for your body, mind, heart, and soul.

Ancient philosophers and healers recognized that the body and the mind were one. Modern research confirms this body/mind connection. In the last 15 years, Western medicine has coined a term for what the ancients knew: psychoneuroimmunology. Harvard Medical School now publishes a professional journal called Mind/Body Medicine. Studies show that improved physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being stimulate an innate healing response in the body. It is possible to create a healthier lifestyle that will promote wellness. The key is to balance the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your life.

Improving and maintaining physical well-being includes proper nutrition, rest, and exercise. It means carefully selecting the activities in which you participate and the people with whom you spend time to ensure that you are making good choices about expending energy and making the most of each day.

Paying attention to the psychological and emotional aspects of your life includes becoming a good observer of your thoughts, feelings, and how/what you feel in your body. This is a time to allow yourself to experience, examine, and express your thoughts and feelings in an honest and forthright way.

Accurately expressing yourself is one of the most important aspects of living with chronic illness. No one will know how you feel and what you can reasonably be expected to do or not do unless you tell people directly. Value yourself and take ownership of your feelings, and thoughts, your resources and choices.

Honor and express your deepest truth and make what you say and how you say it match what you feel. Say your real “yes” and your real “no” and say what you feel without blaming or needing to please others. Don’t avoid saying what is in your heart or on your mind to say. Don’t hide your worries and concerns because you don’t want others to know you are not in control.

Accessing your spiritual nature can be as easy as watching the sunset or taking a walk through a beautiful garden. You might also consider meditation, yoga, chanting, or praying. Whether you call it God, the Universe, higher power, or “the force” a la Steven Spielberg, it is quite comforting and healing to experience the inner peace that is uniquely you.

Sitting in the quiet and allowing your attention to flow inward is very foreign to men and women in the Western world. It is, however, a fundamental practice if one is to develop and maintain health and well-being, inside and outside.

Human beings are resilient and adaptable. When faced with seemingly insurmountable tasks, we rise to the occasion. Chronic illness often motivates us to re-evaluate and reconsider every aspect of life; to review and change habits, goals, choices, and decisions.

This review includes everything from food choices, career/work, social relationships and recreational activities, to including naps and going to sleep earlier. Now is the time to create a more flexible schedule and intentionally pace yourself.

Determination and persistence will enable you to stay motivated through the tough times, and stay involved in activities that are meaningful and joyful. Maintaining your sense of humor is essential.

Invite people into your life who are kind, respectful, and compassionate. Stay away from well-meaning, well-intentioned people who have an agenda for you and can’t see you or hear you accurately.

This is the opportunity to create the changes in your life that will bring meaning to every day and cause you to choose and maintain a lifestyle that promotes and sustains your well-being: physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual.

While chronic illness may close some doors, it will no doubt open others. Take good care! You’re worth it.

Remember, only YOU can make it happen!
