Hair loss prevention through Ayurveda

Hair loss is experienced by all of us at one or the other time. To know the causes of hair fall, it is very essential to know the structure of hair and its normal growth cycle.

Structure of hair

The hair on our scalp can be divided into two parts, the root and shaft. The root part of hair is in the skin (epidermis) of scalp. The hair root is surrounded by a pouch like structure called follicle. The base of hair root is in the shape of a bulb. This bulb is indented by capillaries and nerve fibers. The cells in the center of bulb divide. The newly divided hair cells push the previous cells up. The cells which move upwards die slowly forming hard hair shaft.

The hair shaft has three layers the cuticle, medulla and cortex.

Cuticle is the outer layers and protects the inner layers. It is transparent. Healthy cuticle gives a shiny appearance for hair and unhealthy cuticle gives lifeless look

Medulla is the innermost layer composed of large cells.

Cortex is the layer between cuticle and medulla. This contains pigment and keratin. Cortex determines the bulk and strength of hair.

The hair follicle contains oil secreting glands which make the hair shiny .Stress and illness diminish secretion of oil and pigments causing graying of hair.

According to Ayurveda the hair is considered as a tissue which uses the same nutrients of bone and considered as a tissue which is formed as bi-product of bone tissue.

Normal cycle of hair growth.

About 10 % of the hair on the scalp is in a resting phase at any given time. The resting hair falls after 2 to 3 months and new hair starts growing in its place. The growing phase continues for 2.25 to 6 yrs. During this phase each hair grows approximately 1 cm per month. At any given time about 90% of the hair on scalp will be in growing phase.

Few strands of hair fall as the part of normal hair growth cycle. But some people may experience excessive hair fall which is more than normal cycle. Excessive hair loss can affect men, women and children.

Causes of hair loss

1. Hormonal imbalance in men and women: In men high concentration of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in hair follicles causes hair fall. In women hormonal imbalances during pregnancy and after delivery cause hair fall.

2. High amount of sebum in scalp clogs pores of scalp and prevent nutrition to hair follicle.

3. Inadequate nutrition causes hair fall.

4. Stress, worry, lack of sleep, worry and anxiety cause hair fall

5. Long standing diseases like typhoid, viral infections, anemia, surgery etc cause general debility which lead to hair fall

6. Some medicines used for gout, chemo therapy of cancer , birth control pills , antidepressants etc cause hair fall

7. Diseases like lupus, diabetes cause hair fall.

8. Tying hair tightly pulls the hair from follicles and cause traction alopecia.

9. Heredity also causes hair fall.

10. Dandruff or Fungal infection of scalp.

11. Accumulation of dirt on scalp causes blocking of pores and weakens hair roots. This leads to hair fall.

According to ayurveda the causes of hair loss are described as follows

1. Too much exposure to dust, sunlight, water and other pollutants.

2. Too much of sweating.

3. Irregular sleeping pattern.

4. Anxiety, depression, insomnia.

5. Unhygienic way of living

6. Diseases

7. Alcohol consumption.

Hair loss Remedies

1. Liberal intake of vitamins.

2. High protein and iron rich diet.

3. Consumption of raw vegetables, fresh fruits, salads, green leafy vegetables regularly.

4. Washing hair regularly ( twice weekly ) with suitable shampoo.

5. Using relaxing techniques to overcome stress, anxiety and sleeplessness.

6. Preventing fungal infections of scalp.

7. Preventing hairstyles which pull hair.

Due to these causes the tridoshas get vitiated and cause hair loss. The vitiated doshas affect the scalp skin and cause hair fall occurs. Medicated oil with the herbs Bhringaraja ( Eclipta Alba ), Amalaki ( Embelica officinalis ), Haritaki ( Terminalia chebula ) and Vibhitaki ( Terminalia bellirica ) is a best remedy for hair fall.

Fluency Speech Courses

This article is all about how to achieve fluency and looks at the specific speech impediment known as stammering/stuttering. My name is Steve Hill, I suffered with a stutter from the age of four and despite regular conventional speech therapy, continued stuttering until the age of twenty-two.

I found life with a stutter extremely frustrating as at times I could speak very well. For example when I spoke to what is now my ex-girlfriend I very rarely had a problem, however when attempting to speak to her parents I struggled quite badly.

When I was drunk my fluency level also would improve to a level where I would be shocked if I stuttered at all.

I could not understand why I could talk to one person but not to another and why I could speak when I was drunk but not when I was sober.

I read many books about speech imediments, achieving fluency and stuttering and spoke to many speech therapists. From what I read and from what I was told, I was made to believe that I was unable to live a stuttering-free life as it suggested you are unable to eradicate a stutter.

This is a very negative attitude, however I could not really believe what I was hearing and reading as I knew I could talk very well at times.

I then was fortunate enough to watch Bruce Willis being interviewed on the television. He stated that he had had a stutter which had started when he was a young boy, however he had managed to achieve fluency when he was a late teenager. This was a huge inspiration to me and I then decided that I would attempt to overcome my own speech impediment.

After nearly a year of working very hard by reading books about positive thinking and mind over matter and by basically studying people who I thought were great speakers, I also managed to beat the stutter. As a career I now help other people to achieve fluency.

To breathe properly you must breathe in the following ratio: inhale(1) : hold(2) : exhale(4). For example inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 8 seconds and exhale for 16 seconds. Doing this simple exercise with 10 deep breaths 5 times a day will vastly increase your health, your energy and help maintain a healthy immune system.

Secondly, understand the importance of water to your body and health. Our bodies consist mainly of fluids and water, along with oxygen is the basis of all life. Taking sufficient amounts of water is essential for health and life, but also we need to avoid foods that drain our bodies from vital fluids. Foods that are high in sugar, salt, caffeine and preservatives will actually absorb fluids from your body causing certain vital functions to shut down. Eating foods that are naturally rich in water is essential and include all fruits, vegetables and sprouts.

Your body is your temple and what you put in is what you get out. Stop abusing it and adhere to these simple tips for living a healthy life. The very least you must do to life a healthy life is to stop depriving your body from the two most essential element, water and oxygen.

Detoxing And The Luna Energy

This traditional time for dieting has in recent times become a time of media hype around the benefits of detoxing. All that said if you are determined to have a go at detoxing I would recommend a light fast around the time of the New Moon.

Yes this is the bit where everyone laughs but the new moon offers a natural light energy that is supportive to fasting. Also it gives us a chance once a month to let the system rest and begin to live more in harmony with the luna energy.

The tides are governed by the effects of the moon, fisherman understand the force and know when to fish according to the moon time. Gardeners know that at different times the air has a different quality to it and some days are better for planting, watering or cutting than others. I would like to see this knowledge brought into our 21st century and out of the realms of witchcraft and folk lore and that we begin to respect the natural time of the luna cycle and live with change instead of the unreal expectation that we can be the same each day.

There is a lot to be said for ritual and anyone who has started a fast or detox programme will have been advised to prepare and take a month in the process for full benefits. If we use the luna cycle you will repeat the pattern each month to maintain maximum health benefits which include not just weight loss but will also give you a new and dynamic energy.

The effects of the moon at each stage.

THE NEW MOON

On the day of the new moon the body’s capacity for detoxing is at it’s highest. You can not see the new moon, in diaries it will be marked as a black dot. I interpret this as the moon being empty (not full). We are at out lightest weight in the 28 day cycle and feel better. It’s a great time for breaking bad habits and starting a fresh. Any strong withdrawal symptoms are generally kept at bay at this time. Mentally people tend to react more calmly – think of the opposite when the moon is full, when the ‘lunatic’ within us is in full force.

At this time set aside time to have a quiet 10 minutes or meditate. Think of the moon as an empty gold fish bowl and you are going to fill this bowl with positive energy, thoughts and attainable goals, remember to throw some love in there we can all do with a little more. If you are wanting to give up a bad habit this is a great time. Focus on the bad habit and pay no attention to opinion around you, if you choose to give something up don’t keep asking for a reason, just do it. The new moon will support the new time.

THE WAXING MOON

This is a time for regeneration, absorbing and supplying. The waxing moon supplies, plans, absorbs, builds up, breaths in, stores energy, gathers strength, promotes rest and recovery. The closer to the full moon the more powerful the force.

During this two week period you build up strength. Go back to the gold fish bowl. All that you put in it will enhance you. You are pouring new energy into the bowl – when you look at the moon you will see the light pouring in. This is a time to eat good healthy food. Your body absorbs all the nutrients easily and stores them for the time of fasting. It’s a time when you will become heavier but do not think it’s licence to eat more. Be aware of the natural force – you are filling up so make sure it’s good stuff you are bringing into yourself. When you repeat this cycle after a full detox the benefits will be greater, so improving your health each month. Strengthening more effectively. Deficiencies can also be remedied more easily whilst the moon is waxing as minerals and vitamins are more easily absorbed.

THE FULL MOON

You are now at the strongest force and the body will absorb all kinds of substances well including artificial additives that are in our food. Water accumulates easily and we are full – at our most heaviest.

A good time to fast for a day is on the full moon. The system can afford to take a rest.

THE WANING MOON

As the moon goes from full back to new this is the period when detoxing is at it’s most beneficial and easy to do. Return to the concept of the gold fish bowl. At full moon it is full – marked in the diary as a circle. Now the moon is waning it is beginning to empty. There is a natural flushing out of the system. This is a fourteen day period towards the new moon when the success rate for detoxing will be at it’s greatest. Now having prepared the body with ingredients that are healthy and nourishing you continue but feeling lighter than the previous week when the moon was forcing the storing up and holding of water. You will feel lighter after the full moon and the process will be easy. This statement is worth remembering.

The waning moon detoxifies and washes out, sweats out and breaths out, dries, consolidates, prompts to action and the expenditure of energy. The closer to the new moon, the more effective the force.

This is it. As you reach the new moon and ready to fast for 1 day at that time it will be attainable and beneficial, you will feel new.

When you start the process again and live in harmony with this cycle you will feel the benefits of adding and building up new health and well being in an on-going way.

Remember to rely on your own instincts and less on the authority of another. Use common sense and trust your own instinct.
