Why the Future Looks Bright for Small Boutique Shops

The downturn in the economic system has given us all a fashion rethink. It’s already been well remarked that the recession has heavily had a negative affect on the fashion industry. Although downturns in the economy are nothing new, this current one we’re experiencing is going to have a prolonged impact on our whole concept of fashion. We are living in a very practical age now. It used to be that frivolousness and decadance were part and parcel of the fashion scene – nothing was too excessive or too expensive. – you could only be charged with being too boring. It’s different today though : the fashion labels and catwalks are receiving bad publicity. Even if you look at the more affordable fashion brands, suddenly they’re admonished for manufacturing in overseas sweatshops. What went wrong? Why is it that the public are turning against fashion brands ?

First off, fashion isn’t dead. As a matter of fact, looking online there is huge competition between online store traders (e.g. searching for fashion accessories or mens wrist watches) – a sign there is still a great demand for fashion. It’s the old way we saw that is expiring – being told what’s now trendy by the established labels. Actually, fashion has always looked at our lifestyles instead of the other way around, and nowadays many matters are stopping us buying from big labels. For a start, people are now much more mindful of globalization, and flaunting your clothing labels makes you look selfish and thoughtless in many peer groups today. Secondly, it’s the economy, stupid! Style has always been seen as something of a luxury, not an essential. In an economic downturn, luxury items are the first to be forgotten on the store shelves. Lastly, people define themselves much more individually these days -we don’t need to be ordered what to wear or how to act, we no longer associate ourselves as being part of large groups, and fashion demands that sort of sheep-like thinking to trade in large amounts.

What is the future for fashion labels? As always, they must change to survive – create a wider range of clothing lines to supply to more niches of the marketplace. If you’re a small shop selling individual fashion lines at a decent price, the future looks bright for you in spite of the dismal economic times we are experiencing. Nowadays, individuals are mixing their styles, purchasing from marketplaces and smaller, inexpensive fashion stores.
