Construction Site Risks to be Monitored by HSE

HSE has decided to launch an intricate inspection for ensuring observance of health and safety standards at construction sites across the country.

It is a well-known fact that the construction industry is among the most dangerous industries in Great Britain claiming a number of lives every year. Statistics show, that the industry witnessed as many as 53 deaths and 11,264 injuries on site in 2008. The present drive is focussed on making employers aware of the risks and the measures that can prevent accidents.

The initiative will initially target refurbishing and roofing sectors. Inspectors will make surprise visits to the sites to check compliance of health and safety measures.

According to Philip White, Chief Inspector of Construction with HSE, most of the accidents at construction worksites can be attributed to negligence in observing health and safety guidelines. Despite significant improvement in some sectors of the industry, the refurbishment segment is still undeveloped in this regard and so are the smaller take-ups.

HSE is quite repugnant about the negligent approach of the employers towards ensuring the health and safety of its workers in a dangerous industry such as construction. The vigilance body has also noted that most of these accidents are avoidable with a little bit of foresight and precaution.

White is optimistic that the HSE inspection report will reflect good industrial practices in majority of the cases. However, he adds that employers of sites with inadequate health and safety measures will be punished accordingly. Apart from shutting down the place, the employers will also be prosecuted.
