During the Month of August, Cabin Rentals in Western North Carolina Make for Cooler Vacations

Summer is sweet (and cooler) in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and August cabin rentals provide wonderful lodging during one of the best times of the year.

For as long as anyone can remember, the Southern Appalachians have been the ideal place to climb up out of the heat summer brings to lower elevations. And in and around the Asheville area, visitors have many ways to cool down even when the temperature gets a little too high.

For one thing, August cabin rentals are never very far from the highest summit in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River. At 6,684 feet, the top of Mount Mitchell not only has spectacular views, but is also between 10 and 30 degrees cooler than Asheville. You might even want to take a jacket or a sweatshirt.

For a unique splash and quick cool-down, try Sliding Rock near the town of Brevard. This 60-foot natural rock slide is open to the public for the small fee of $1 per person. Its water empties into a cold pool that is six to seven feet deep and has been keeping locals and tourists entertained and refreshed for generations.

It’s hard to think about the mountains of Western North Carolina and its rivers without thinking of whitewater rafting, a cool recreation choice for guests of the area’s August cabin rentals. On the French Broad River, French Broad Rafting Expeditions (1-800-570-7238) is the closest whitewater rafting company to Asheville. Located at 9800 U.S. Highway 25-770 in Marshall, it is approximately 24 miles from Asheville and offers expeditions through the river’s class III Ledges Rapid. The company also takes visitors on calm-water trips.

During August, cabin rentals in the Asheville area are sure to have guests who are looking for a great place to enjoy ice cream. On the north side of town, The Hop has provided ice cream for great summertime treats since 1978. In the 1980s the original owners started making their own ice cream, and this tradition continues today. First located in a former service station on Merrimon Avenue, the place became so popular that it had to move in 2007 to a larger location just up the street at the Merrimon Square Shopping Center at 640 Merrimon Avenue.

Lastly, if you’re a connoisseur of microbrews, you already know that nothing cools you off quite as nicely as an ice-cold, well-crafted brew. Some of the best microbrews within easy reach of August cabin rentals’ guests can be found in downtown Asheville. They include the Lexington Avenue Brewery (LAB) at 39 N. Lexington Avenue, Jack of the Wood at 95 Patton Avenue, the Craggie Brewing Company at 197 Hilliard Avenue.
