Chaos Theory

In any poker tournament, you’re given a set of information about the hands you’re dealt and the players you play, but let’s get out of that single table box and think of the other players.

During the course of a tournament, there will be several thousand hands most likely that you’ll have no direct influence in, on your own table and on others. But these hands will have a direct influence on how you play your game later in the tournament. On a logical level it makes perfect sense. The player at table 6 that’s getting dealt AA, KK and the likes and is building a big stack early, is inevitably going to have an effect on how you play him later in the tournament when you meet up.

And this same theory can hold true to you if you’re the big stack and you’re playing small stacks. You’ll be in the same scenario. It’s the indirect effect, known as chaos theory.

In an unpredictable world where events happening in other places effect events seemingly unrelated at other places, this is tantamount to understand when thinking about online poker at the meta-game level.

So how do you apply this? Well you use the lobby online, and see the big stacks, and you start to formulate your strategy based on the stacks ahead on top of the table you’re already playing. If you want to compete with a viable stack, and you have 2000 chips and someone has 20k chips, you’re going to have to do some serious winning before you meet that stack.

We call it variance, but really it’s just the chaotic nature of tournaments where other people affect you even though they’re not at your table. Remember this when you play poker online.

Are Sit and Goes for You?

There is a strong trend in the online poker world to earn your admission to a high stakes poker tournament through satellite play. Most of these tournaments are held online, making them easy to access from anywhere in the world the fad for satellite entry has led to the development of a unique form of poker tournament called the sit-and-go.

Sit and go tournaments are not for everyone because there are notoriously small and quick. A standard sit and go tournament (or SnG for short) consists of a single table. The goal of a SnG is to end up in the top three places according to the number of chips you have at the end. The top three spots are paid out according to an established prize rubric just like in a normal poker online tournament.

While SnGs offer a speedy track to the pot, they are not ideal for those people who prefer a more leisurely game. You don’t get a chance to enjoy the experience of sitting at a table with your friends when you are involved in a SnG. It’s just quick and dirty poker with a single goal in mind. If you can’t play a focused game, then SnGs are not for you.

Which Limit

poker online can be played in a no-limit or limited bet format. In no-limit, you push in all your chips at any time. A limit game imposes restrictions on how much any player can bet at any time. The two formats tend to draw different types of players. Recreational online poker players are more likely to choose a low-limit game, with betting ranges from 1 up to about 5. The fact that the betting is limited also limits risk. In limit poker, you’ll find more players chasing after pots, donking off their chips with crying calls. It is very difficult to bluff in these games, and bad beats are common. The focus is more on the cards in hand than the other players. No-limit online poker attracts tighter aggressive players who are acutely aware of their positions at the table and the other players’ betting styles. There is seldom any chasing in no-limit and bad beats are far more rare. Players remaining after the flop usually have a hand. No-limit players are less averse to risk than limit players, and bluffing is more widely used and successful in no-limit games. Hand values also differ in the limit vs. no-limit. A big pair can be easily beaten by two smaller pairs in a limit game because the big pair could not bet enough to scare other players away. Poker tournaments draw both types of players because, even though there is no-limit betting, the entry fee limits risk and reassures the limit players. To win at tournament a play, those accustomed to limit playing have to adopt a tight aggressive style because loose calling and chasing to the river will eat up a chip stack fast.

Hosting a Home Poker Game

Online casinos and card rooms have introduced many to the fun and exciting game of poker. After playing online, it’s not surprising that people would want to experience a live game at a casino with other players. New players may be nervous about trying their luck in a casino though, and prefer a more relaxed home game with family and friends.

Here a few tips on what you need to get a home game going. First, you’ll need a table that will seat at least six people. A round one is ideal. There are inexpensive table tops customized for card games available in many stores.

The next thing is chips, which are integral to poker. Of course you can always substitute some other items, like dried beans or coins, but real poker chips make the game more genuine. There are inexpensive plastic ones and chips made from clay that are similar to the kind used in casinos. If you game has six players, you’ll need at least 300 in chips, and 900+ chips for larger groups.

Obviously, you’ll need a deck of cards, which also vary in quality. Plastic cards resist bending and can survive spills. Inexpensive paper cards wear out quickly and are easily bent, making them easy to “mark” which can spoil the game. Copag and Kem are two popular brands of quality plastic cards.

If you’re hosting a home poker, get a book of rules on poker, preferably one that describes the formats for a variety of poker games. There is bound to be some controversy about hands and betting tactics, so rely on the rule book for guidance to keep the peace. For tournament games, you’ll also need a timer. Then round up a few friends and family members and you’ll be ready to play.

Banning Poker Is Just a Lawn Mower: the More Serious Problem Exists at the Root

Online Casino Advisory put out a controversial article detailing the seriousness of gambling and pokern addiction, but the thesis claims that a ban on gambling doesn’t address the real problem, compulsive personalities.

Too many times we get tear-jerk stories about the tragedies that befall a gambling poker addict, and that message is perpetuated over and over by the conservative, anti-gambling movements as an excuse to ban gambling in it’s entirety.

But the fact remains, that people with personality disorders simply find other outlets to act out. Expert Lawrence Anderson, a problem gambling analyst, articulates this. “Many studies have found compulsive gambling and poker to be and expression of an underlying behavior dysfunction.” Likewise, “Removing gambling from the equation does not cure the cause, but simply forces it to manifest itself in other dysfunctional ways, including drugs, alcohol abuse, or domestic issues.”

Anderson makes other astute points as well. The same stories, the exaggerated anecdotes could be said of guns, of drugs, of people addicted to their work or career.

The problem is one of oversimplification. We can blame the vectors that the problems manifests itself through until we’re blue in the face, but the fact doesn’t change: we’re not addressing the real issue.

Instead of shunning away from issues by trying to get them out of the pubic eye, we should as a people instead find ways to help the person deal with the cause, this includes therapy, support groups, and social reinforcement.

Playing Flush Draws

Flush draws are some of the strongest draws you can have on the flop in Texas Holdem. They can result in winning you big pots. When you flop a flush draw in Limit Texas Holdem, it’s either going to be on a two-suited or three-suited flop.

Some may argue this point, but I would tell you to play them differently depending on what situation you are.

For example, if you are faced with a raise when you have a flush draw. The odds are not in your favor to hit the flush. So you need to calculate pot odds. Since there are 13 cards of each suit you will always have nine outs to make your flush when you have flopped a flush draw. This is approximately 2-1 (35%) against improving by the river. Your hand is stronger if you have additional draws like a pair, a straight draw, overcards and so forth.

When you flop a flush draw on a two-suited flop, you are almost always getting good pot odds to draw to the flush. When pot odds are in your favor, it’s pretty much an automatic call unless you’re low on chips, and this would make you pot committed. If that’s the case, don’t call. Either fold or go all in. You have to decide if this is the hand to gamble.

There are, however, a few exceptions:

*-Heads-up in an unraised pot and all you have is the flush draw. This might be a good spot to semi-bluff, but don’t check-call to the river.

*-If the flop comes with a pair and there is heavy action on the flop. Someone is likely to hold trips and you might lose to a full house even if you hit your flush.

*-You flop a small flush draw and there is heavy action on the flop. You might be drawing dead to a bigger flush draw. This is one of the reasons why the small-suited connectors are preferably played in late position.

When pot odds are not in your favor, don’t automatically fold. Consider the implied pot odds, which take into account future actions of remaining players. If there are a lot of players in the hand, and the majority will go after you by calling, you’re increasing their pot odds which means they’ll be more motivated to call themselves. At the end of the betting round, when you have added a few more callers to the pot value, perhaps your poker pot odds turn out favorab
